artist statement

KatzoWork is my studio, folding several disciplines under my nickname, Katzo.

My focus is on atmospheric watercolor and studio metalwork, a curious combo. The common thread is fascination with light that’s simultaneously reflected and absorbed by a surface, and in wildly varying ways.

Painting and metalsmithing involve both the intentions and accidents that happen with each material and process: pigments, metals, water and fire. Plans go astray and more interesting work results!

background

When I was six, I thumbtacked a bunch of watercolors to the studs of our garage, charged a nickel for tickets and launched myself into the local art scene. The show was well attended by family and favorably reviewed.

I’m a poster girl for what happens when talented family and teachers guide a kid into artmaking. This upbringing, a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and post-graduate design study in the US and UK all helped me toward the creative life. Making art coexisted with a long, lucky career directing national communication design for large nonprofits including The Nature Conservancy and American Red Cross.

Currently active with Studio10 Artists, Potomac Valley Watercolorists, Baltimore Watercolor Society, Virginia Watercolor Society, The Art League, Rehoboth Art League, and Maryland Federation of Art. With the Arlington Artists Alliance: past Board member; Studio Manager for 18 studio artists; Chair, Marketing Committee; current Co-Curator of exhibitions at the Arlington County Board Offices.
